My Writing Routine

My writing routine hasn’t really changed since 2019 when I took a career break from teaching. I write at home when my children are at school and the house is quiet. Sadly, I don’t have a writing space or even my own desk! Instead, I write wherever I feel most comfortable that day: at the kitchen table, on the sofa or even sitting up in bed if it’s really cold. Instead of a proper bookcase, I have books and notebooks stashed in every nook and cranny of the house – I really hope my husband doesn’t go and look in my wardrobe or the eves of our renovation.

Where I Write…

Sometimes, when I’m ferrying my children around to various clubs, I write in the car while I’m waiting for them. There are less distractions in the car than at home so it can be quite productive. I’m also lucky enough to have a lovely garden so writing outdoors in the summer is a real treat, although it can be tricky to find a spot shady enough to actually see the screen.

I hear a lot of writers say that they enjoy writing in cafes. I struggle with that for several reasons. Firstly, it’s quite expensive and, secondly, I find I write best in a quiet environment so my brain can focus. However, my cousin runs a gorgeous little coffee shop in a nearby village called St. Agnes. It’s called The Sorting Office and it’s a real treat to go there, especially when I’m in need of a break or have something to celebrate.

A Daily Walk

Writing is very sedentary and I never want to take living in Cornwall for granted. Therefore, my daily walks (or even a run) are a big part of my routine. I live a five minute drive from Perranporth Beach and often go there with my two dogs after I drop the children off at school and before I start my writing day.

Healthy Snacking

Because I write at home, drinks and snacks are on tap, but can be a huge distraction. I try to be disciplined and stick to eating and snacking at set times, otherwise I’d never stop! I have cereal and fruit in the morning and lunch around 12 to 12.30pm, followed by a small treat. My favourite snacks are dried apricots and, after I pick the children up, I often have a cheeky hot chocolate. However, some days just call for an endless supply of chocolate or some cake – I particularly love rock buns, fruit cake or granola squares.
